What I offer

Kiran Ashri at her desk
Most of my work is family litigation at the Family Courts in Gurgaon. A growing part of it happens before anyone files anything: consultation, counselling, mediation in chamber, and agreements drafted so that a dispute never becomes a case.

Family litigation

  • Divorce, mutual consent and contested
  • Child custody, guardianship and visitation
  • Maintenance, alimony and matrimonial property
  • Protection and residence orders under the Domestic Violence Act (DVA)
  • Marriage registration and legal formalities
  • Transfer petitions and execution
I appear at the Family Courts, Gurgaon, across Delhi NCR, Faridabad and Sohna, for clients living in and outside India.

Guardianship and custody

When a marriage ends, children carry most of the weight. The courts, guided by the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890 and the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, 1956, put the child's welfare first: stability, safety, education and wellbeing. I represent parents in custody, visitation and guardianship matters, and I work towards arrangements both parents can live with wherever that is possible. A courtroom win that damages a child is not a win.

Consultation

Forty minutes, by video or in my chamber, to work out where you stand and which route is realistic. If I think you do not need a lawyer, I say so in those forty minutes.

Pre-marriage counselling

Marriage brings together two people, two families, and a lifetime of unspoken expectations. Most of the misunderstandings that later turn into disputes begin there, in assumptions neither partner said out loud. In structured sessions I help couples surface those differences early: money, family, long-term values, and the practical business of building a life together. The aim is clarity going in and fewer surprises later, not agreement on everything.

Post-marital counselling

Friction after marriage is not a failure. Left alone, it is what turns into one. When couples come early, counselling can settle what would otherwise harden into conflict or end up in court. I work directly with both partners to protect communication and dignity, drawing on matrimonial practice as much as on law, so that they find their way back to a working relationship, or, where that is not possible, separate with less damage done.

Mediation and negotiation in chamber

Settlement discussions across a table rather than across a courtroom, with the terms drafted and recorded so they hold. Where a matter can be settled this way, I say so before a file is opened.

Prenuptial agreements

A prenuptial agreement sets out, before the wedding, how assets, finances and responsibilities are handled if the marriage ends. Drafted with care it takes the ambiguity out of a hard conversation and gives both partners a clear footing. It follows naturally from the pre-marriage counselling.

Wills, estate and patrimony documentation

A will decides how a lifetime of property and responsibility passes on, and how much clarity or conflict the next generation inherits with it. Patrimony covers movable and immovable assets: real estate, ancestral property, jewellery and financial instruments. I draft wills, gift deeds, family settlements and full succession documentation so that intentions are recorded clearly and leave no room for dispute.

Case strategy consultation

Not every client needs a new lawyer. Some need a clearer strategy for the one they already have. If your matter is with another advocate, new or long-pending, I review the facts, the current approach and the path forward, and give you an independent view. You do not have to change counsel to get it.

For employers

External member on Internal Committees under the POSH Act, 2013. Awareness sessions, gender-sensitisation workshops, committee formation and training, and inquiries run so that they are procedurally sound and fair to everyone in the room. Organisations engage me for one-off sessions and as an ongoing external member. I also speak at law schools, colleges, corporate forums and government organisations on family law, matrimonial rights, workplace conduct and where law meets emotional wellbeing.
