Something is happening at home and I am not safe.

Before you write to me
A message on WhatsApp stays on your phone. If someone else can see this phone, email me at mail2me_kiranashri@yahoo.co.in or ask for a callback at a time that suits you, and nothing will arrive unexpectedly.

What this actually is

The Domestic Violence Act lets you ask a magistrate for orders that work now, not at the end of a case. Those can include an order to stop the violence, an order that you cannot be thrown out of the house you live in, money for your immediate needs, and custody of your children in the meantime. It applies to physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse. You do not have to file for divorce to use it.

What happens, in order

01
We talk, and nothing is filed
Including whether an application is the right step at all this week.
02
Application prepared and filed
Faster where there is a medical record or a police complaint already.
03
Interim orders considered
The magistrate decides what protection is granted, and when.
04
Hearings until final order
Protection can be in place long before the matter ends.

What to bring

Anything that records what has happened: medical papers, messages, a police complaint, names of anyone who saw it. Bring nothing if bringing it is a risk. We can work from what you tell me.
