What this actually is

Money is where most matrimonial matters actually get decided, and where most people are given the least accurate information. There is no fixed formula for maintenance in Indian law. There are factors a court weighs, including both parties' income, the standard of living during the marriage, and the needs of any children. Prenuptial agreements and settlement agreements are drafted here as well.

What happens, in order

An application for interim maintenance is filed and decided early, before the main matter.

Both sides disclose income and assets on affidavit.

Permanent maintenance or alimony is decided with the main matter, or earlier by settlement.

Property and streedhan are dealt with by agreement or by order.

What to bring

Salary slips and bank statements. Income tax returns. Property papers. A list of streedhan. Monthly expenses.
